Two people run out onto a football field on Sunday morning. One is tackled by security. One is cheered by the crowd. What’s the difference? One was a fan who got a little carried away and didn’t belong on the field. One was a player who was supposed to be out there.
So, as Christians, are we supposed to be fans or players? Galatians 5:13, “13 For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.” We have experienced freedom in Jesus. There’s a temptation to just sit on that. We’ve been saved and we’re happy about it. There’s a temptation to show up to church and cheer and just be a fan.
But, that’s not what we’re supposed to use our freedom for. We’re supposed to use our freedom in Christ Jesus to serve one another. We’re supposed to be players, in uniform, on the field. The fan gets tackled by security because they don’t belong on the field. We are not fans. We are players. We belong in the game, serving in ministry, loving one another.
Thank you for serving this week. We are on God’s team and this week is your week to make plays for his kingdom. I hope and pray your service inspires others to get out of the stands and onto the field where they belong. Thank you for your service and ministry in our church!
